Snapchat Geofilters: what are they?

Have you ever tried explaining a geofilter to someone who doesn’t yet understand Snapchat?

Think of it this way:

a Geofilter is to Snapchat what Times Square is to New York. Geofilters are famously known for their relevance to the location of the Snapchatter. They can be entertaining, eye-catching, fun, informative & completely relevant to the location. And while Times Square boasts that signage advertising can expect nearly 1.5 million impressions each day, Snapchat geofilters don’t leave you wondering – you’ll know definitively.

That’s because you can run a filter for a set period of time, in a specific location and know exactly how many people saw the filter and/or used it.

During Calgary Stampede last year, I ran geofilters throughout the city to test them. Here’s what I learned for a little more than $6 USD:

  • Timing: 6:00 PM – 2:00 AM
  • Area Covered: 41,050 Sq Ft
  • Uses: 39

That means that for less than $0.20 people took action on the filter; and I had a CPM of $2.93. Pretty incredible ROI, don’t you think?
